Storing Fine China and Crystal
Taking care of fine china and crystal is a very delicate process. Oftentimes these gems are passed down generations and have great sentimental value, as well as financial value. Taking great care in packing these items is crucial to extending their life, so we offer you some tips to keep in mind when doing so.
*Consider packing these items in wooden crates instead of ordinary cardboard boxes. Boxes can become weak and break down over time. If you do need to store in boxes, consider doubling the boxes to ensure they are sturdy and durable.
*Pack the bottom of the box or storage crate with lots of padding. Tissue, packing peanuts, or bubble wrap are all good possibilities, or things like towels and clothing make nice alternate options.
*Put bigger items toward the bottom of the box; those items that can hold the most weight. More fragile items such as thinner crystal, chipped or repaired pieces should be toward the top to prevent the weight of other items from causing further damage.
*Keep the rims of cups and bowls up when possible, since the rims are the most sensitive part. Those items should also be toward the top.
*Be careful to stack items such as dishes, instead of sliding them, to prevent chipping and scratching.
*Give all items lots of room. It’s important not to overcrowd. Also keep in mind weight; don’t pack too heavily.
*Bowls and cups can be filled with crumbled newspaper, but be careful using newspaper to wrap items as the ink may rub off. Consider packaging made especially for dishes, plain paper, tissues, clothing, or other items.
*Wrap each piece individually to prevent rubbing, scratching and chipping. Be sure to tape each item shut, so the shuffle of moving doesn’t expose the edges.
*Try to keep similar sizes together when possible. When that is not possible, add more padding and room between items.
*Be sure the storage container is completely sealed shut. If using a box, be sure to not only reinforce the bottom and seal the top, but it is also recommended to seal the sides as well.
Fine china and crystals are too valuable to leave to chance. Exercise extreme caution, take your time, and consider these steps to help ensure you can enjoy these items for years to come.
